Submitted : 28.02.2013 Accepted : 04.03.2013 Published: 13.03.2013

Abstract

A lingual thyroid is a rare anomaly that is associated with an embryologic defect in the migration of the thyroid gland. The tongue is the most common ectopic location of thyroid tissue seen in approximately 90% of cases. It occurs more frequently in women, and may result inhypothyroidism. The development of clinical symptoms usually depends on the size of lingual thyroid tissue. In addition to the clinical finding of an asymptomatic mass at the root of tongue, a lingual thyroid may present with dysphagia, dysphonia and dyspnea. We report a case of lingual thyroid in an 8-year-old female patient who presentedwith dysphagia and subclinical hypothyroidism, and review the current literature on the subject.
